Orange County ARES / RACES / Skywarn is
a volunteer Amateur Radio group that provides emergency communications
for local and state government agencies. We also provide communications
for public service events such as walkathons, bike tours, and charitable
events. |

SKYWARN is a nationwide network of
volunteer weather spotters who report hazardous weather to local
National Weather Service (NWS) offices. Amateur Radio operators and
weather observers, generally operating through local organizations, are
ideally equipped to contribute to the SKYWARN program. However, the
general public is also an integral part of this program.
SKYWARN Volunteers are trained by NWS personnel to recognize features
associated with rapidly developing, mature, and dissipating
thunderstorms which cause hazardous weather. SKYWARN spotters also
provide reports of heavy snow, heavy rain and flooding. |
SKYWARN Spotters provide ground truth on
the atmosphere that we observe from radar, satellites and various
reporting stations. They are our eyes and ears, helping to provide
better forecasts and warnings to the Tri-State Region.
To be a SKYWARN Spotter in the Tri-State SKYWARN Program, we ask that
you attend a Basic Skywarn Class at least once every three (3) or four
(4) years. This class is free-of-charge and lasts approximately two (2)
hours.

- Supercell Structure and Appearance
- Tornado Life Cycle
- Tornado Classifications and Variations
- Tornado, Funnel Cloud and Wall Cloud Look-alikes
Severe Weather Skywarn Spotter Training classes are taught by
Meteorologists from the NYC National Weather Service Forecast Office and
co-sponsored by Orange County Dept. of Emergency Services and Orange
County Amateur Radio Emergency Service.
